These coins were issued at the beginning of the Calgary winter Olympic program in 1985 through to series completion in 1987 as a joint venture of the Royal Canadian Mint and the Government of Canada in order to raise funds in support of hosting the 1988 winter Olympics and to provide monetary support to those Canadians participating in the games.
